They have spoken widely about their visual, music, and consulting work across universities and organizations, including Creative Capital; the Kresge Foundation; Chautauqua Visual Arts; Brown University; The Dutch Art Institute; University of California, Berkeley; Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA); and Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD).Sharp’s writing has been published in The Creative Independent, Public Parking, Testudo, NYFA, Kickstarter, and The Agora Journal of Urban Planning. Using the United States as a case study, I unearth the social patterns and public policies that cause collective fallout. I then transform this research into tangible systems that build a more equitable, sustainable world I want to live in. I gravitate to four mediums to achieve this: film, sculpture, sound, and social practice. I first collage photographs and video clips into short films that discuss the deterioration of my own body, religious beliefs, and public policy. Second, my sculptures repurpose materials “leftover” from capitalism, like shipping supplies and plastic bags, into warning signs for future generations. Third, my sounds from field recordings and sonic sculptures are translated into music and deejay sets that consider how we fall apart—and how we may put ourselves back together. Fourth, my social practice takes the shape of writing, interdisciplinary organizing, archival podcasts, public installations, and bartering. With this work, I design support structures that find and allocate the resources my community needs to collectively craft the world we want to inhabit. My goal is to offer these structures as templates for the greater public to use and co-create solutions to the problems they face. Some consider this “queering” the system; I call it functional optimism. Referencing minimalist and readymade traditions, the work frames care and precarity as infrastructural conditions.Over the course of the show, visitors from children to elders sat on the piece and left indentations, adjustments, and handprints on the work. I harvest these materials from the neighborhoods and homes in which I live, pushing them away from their “leftover” or “periphery” status and staging them as readymades or transforming them into structures mid-decay. The names typically reference the object or space the material once protected or covered. From styrofoam melted with acetone to rebonded fabric, I find my sculptures help me discover new meaning in what many of us consider “mundane,” “ordinary,” or “obvious”—which are the systems most pernicious to our health, climate, and neighbors. Nearly all processes on Earth are cyclical, for example, but a lot of human processes are illogically linear (i.e. the “end” as landfill, sidewalk, or museum collection). I use my practice as a way to bring these materials “back” into a cycle to consider how they could be presented, and represented, once again. And who knows—maybe one day we stop shipping objects from one continent to another. Most of the creek is currently underground in culverts, but it wasn’t always that way. Hundreds of years have transformed the creek into a "ghost river"—a flowing body of water that once flowed above ground but has now been covered by human urbanization, roads, and infill.Coldbrook Creek (2024) is also a public artwork by Kate Levy, where a series of public markers and audio installations draw attention to the existence of and histories surrounding Coldbrook Creek. Levy invited artist Daniel Sharp (Endash), born himself in Grand Rapids, to transform sound recordings of places where the Creek currently flows underground—through pipes, sewage, and more—into a soundscape for the public installation. The soundtrack, now available for the first time as a digital release on Bandcamp, considers what happens when liquid is forced underground; what happens, for example, when tears become veins, floodplains become floor plans, and cracks become geysers?When Coldbrook Creek is paired with audio from community members including Mary and Peter Lewandoski, Keely Moriarty and Lauren Davis, and Ron Yob (Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians), the work becomes The Sound Underground, installed across five locations in Coldbrook Creek’s watershed.&nbsp;Each site contains audio and visual information pertinent to the location.To download Coldbrook Creek, head here. Dúlamán sings of the tradition of gathering seaweed for food, bathing, and fertilizer. Rory Dall’s Sister’s Lament was originally published in 1778 by Daniel Dow as a Scottish hymn.The film (17 minutes 15 seconds) explores how bodies translate anxiety into physical infections. It considers “narrative medicine” as a tool for healing psychosomatic pain and places it in conversation with Western medicine, which has often suppressed people’s—often queer people’s—ability to identify the roots of their wounds. An array of 5-4 melodies, 7-16 hi hats, 6-4 bass lines, and 3-4 triplet synths are layered over standard or non-standard rhythms. Some songs lack any pattern at all. The result is something cyclical: moments of alignment and clarity lead to dissolving and chaos as sounds rotate on their own time. The work ultimately aims a critique at contemporary house and techno's assumptive reliance on the 4-4 time signature, expected drops, and monotony. It is algorithmic and technical.
